“Somesul-Napoca” Folklore Group, Romania

The group comes from a town in the Transylvania Province called Cluj-Napoca. The town is the fifth largest in the country, with 400,000 inhabitants and "SOMESUL-NAPOCA" is considered the most famous folk dance group in the city.

“Somesul-Napoca” folklore group was founded in 1973 by its artistic director, Mr. Dr. Zamfir Dejeu. The aim of the group is to preserve and to cultivate the genuine folk creation of Romania, and especially that coming from Transylvania.

The dancers have in their repertory about fifty traditional dances, which come from almost all the folk areas of the country. The instrumentalists themselves can play an impressive number of songs from our folklore treasure.

The exact interpretation of the famous Romanian dances and of the played songs comes directly from folklore research carried by the group’s leaders, and proves the characteristics of the traditional Romanian creation.

The most complex dances in the group’s repertory are from the Transylvanian Plain: a distinctive combination of straight, syncopated and asymmetric rhythms.

The group has won numerous international prizes,
